A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to have a Sunday off and that meant a trip to the Farmer’s Market! I have lived in Baltimore for over 5 years and this was my first time ever! I usually work on Sunday mornings and Patrick has to go to the market solo. I had no idea how big it actually was until we got there. There are lots of vendors selling the usual fruits and veggies but there are also a lot of people set up with antiques and crafts that they’ve made. We got up super early and headed downtown. I was informed that “you gotta get there early to snag the good stuff”. I didn’t realize that meant getting there at 7am but I was sure glad I did.
Someone was a little grumpy and needed a coffee..
I opted for a fresh squeezed lemonade instead..
This guy is awesome. He looks kinda mean but he’s not at all. His tomatoes are ridiculous. Seriously, Maryland’s tomatoes have been incredible this year and his are the best I’ve ever had. He also just stands there yelling about his tomatoes all day in his cute little outfit.
Another reason why I love the market: fresh flowers. I was actually surprised how many flower vendors there were. There were all different booths where you could make your own bouquet, purchase a pre-made bouquet, or pick out your favorite plants and herbs. I picked out daisies (my favorite flowers) and a beautiful bouquet of wild flowers.
Someone was a bit happier after some samples of cheeses and green tomatoes.
The day was a success. We filled up 3 huge reusable shopping bags full of produce and fresh eggs and we spent less that 40 dollars. (That’s including my flowers and our drinks!) I’m really glad I got to go before the market season ends. It’s nice to be able to see these people who own the farms and know exactly where your food is coming from, it’s also A LOT cheaper than the grocery store. What’s your favorite thing to buy at the Farmer’s Market?

I may have gone a bit overboard at the farmers market. But when presented with a rainbow of heirloom tomatoes and perfect aubergine eggplants, I just can’t say no. My eyes may have been bigger than my stomach, and my refrigerator. After an enormous pan of eggplant parmesan, I was still left with two large eggplants and a basket full of tomatoes… what’s a girl to do except make a bowl of hearty and creamy soup?! keep reading
